German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared his intention to re-establish Germany as a driving force within the European Union and contribute personally to Europe’s success in the coming years.

During his first EU summit in Brussels since taking office in May, Merz voiced strong support for the European Commission’s efforts to swiftly reach a trade agreement with the United States. He emphasized the urgency of a rapid resolution, noting that the July 9 deadline for tariff negotiations with the U.S. is fast approaching. Merz also criticized the European Commission for the perceived complexity of its negotiations.

Stance on Israel-Gaza Conflict

Regarding Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, the Chancellor rejected the idea of punitive measures or the suspension of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel. This statement followed an EU report accusing Israel of violating principles of international cooperation. Merz urged restraint and respect for international law from all parties in the Middle East.
