German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that some U.S. lawmakers do not fully grasp the scale of Russia’s rearmament campaign, expressing concern about the lack of awareness in Washington regarding the threat posed by Moscow.
Merz’s comments came a day after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, during a business conference in Berlin, according to Reuters.
“I met with several senators on Capitol Hill and told them to take a look at Russia’s rearmament,” Merz said.
“They clearly have no idea what is currently happening there,” he added, without naming the senators he had spoken with.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the country has significantly increased its military capabilities, running arms production around the clock. Moscow has also signed weapons deals with North Korea and Iran—moves that have alarmed European officials.
