In his first official visit as Chancellor of Europe’s largest economy, Friedrich Merz is set to travel to Washington D.C. on Wednesday evening.
According to Deutsche Welle, Merz will hold high-level talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday. The discussions are expected to focus primarily on efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine and address the trade tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for maintaining strong U.S.-Germany relations. Wadephul visited Washington last week, where he met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“They gave me confidence that we can reach agreements in mutual interest, even on issues where we have differing opinions,” Wadephul told the German news agency DPA.
This visit marks a crucial step in strengthening transatlantic cooperation amid global economic and security challenges.
