Lionel Messi was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Joe Biden, after sending a letter informing that he could not attend the ceremony.
The White House: “Messi deserves the highest civilian honor in the United States. He is the most decorated player in the history of professional football.”
“Messi supports health and education programs for children worldwide through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.”
Letter from Leo Messi:
“It is a great honor to receive this recognition. I am truly grateful for it. Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment, and I was unable to attend the ceremony at the White House on January 4th.”
“I deeply appreciate this gesture, and I would be happy to meet at another time to receive the award when I am next in the United States.”
