Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced changes to the company’s content moderation policies and practices, citing the shifting political and social landscape as well as a desire to embrace free expression.

Zuckerberg stated that Meta would end its fact-checking program with trusted partners and replace it with a community-driven system, similar to X’s “Community Notes” system, as reported by NBC News.

These changes will affect Facebook and Instagram, the two largest social media platforms in the world, each with billions of users, as well as the Threads network.

“We will return to our roots and focus on reducing errors, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms.

First, we will remove fact-checkers and replace them with community notes, similar to those on X, starting in the U.S.,” Zuckerberg said in a video.

He mentioned the elections as a significant influence on the company’s decision and criticized “legacy media and governments” for allegedly pushing “towards increasing censorship.”

Additionally, Zuckerberg stated that the systems Meta had built for moderating its platforms were making many mistakes, but emphasized that the company would continue to aggressively moderate content related to drugs, terrorism, and child exploitation.
