Mexico has a backup plan in place in case the United States imposes tariffs, as previously threatened, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum stated that more details on the issue would be shared tomorrow, but assured that Mexico is ready for any decision the US makes. “We have plan B, C, D,” she said, without revealing further specifics about these plans.
Mexican officials met with their American counterparts in Washington last week to discuss trade and security policies, as Mexico works to prevent the imposition of tariffs, Reuters reports.
Sheinbaum described the meetings in Washington as “cordial” and noted that coordination with the US has been very good so far.
Former President Donald Trump accused Mexico and Canada of not doing enough to stop the flow of synthetic drugs like fentanyl and the arrival of migrants at their borders with the US, threatening comprehensive tariffs if these issues are not addressed.
US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnik stated that tariffs for Canada and Mexico would take effect tomorrow, but President Trump will decide whether to maintain the planned 25% rate.
