The Albanian Road Authority (ARRSH) has temporarily closed the Milot auto-railway bridge, which spans 788 meters, after discovering major structural damage that poses a serious risk to safety and stability.
According to an official statement, a technical inspection revealed severe deterioration in the bridge’s support foundations, advanced erosion at the base due to unregulated gravel extraction from the riverbed, and general scouring across the entire river structure.
With heavy traffic, especially during the summer season, authorities decided to completely suspend traffic across the bridge until emergency repairs are carried out. These repairs are currently being planned in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Tirana.
As part of the national “100 Bridges” program, supported by the World Bank, construction of a new bridge to replace the existing structure is already in the pipeline.
In the meantime, the ARRSH urges citizens to use alternative routes via Lezhë–Milot and the National Road (Rruga e Kombit) to ease traffic flow during the closure.
