The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, has requested the Chairwoman of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, Ekaterina Trendafilova, to take action to address the issue of removing Jakup Krasniqi’s tie on Monday, before the court session in The Hague.

In a letter to Trendafilova, Minister Haxhiu described the request to remove the tie as an absurd act.

In Monday’s session of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague, the former spokesperson of the KLA, Jakup Krasniqi, had his tie with national symbols removed before entering the courtroom. Krasniqi’s lawyer raised this issue during the session, but the request was not publicly addressed.

“Through this letter, I write to you regarding the recent situation that occurred in the court session at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. According to the information we received, before Mr. Jakup Krasniqi entered the courtroom, his tie was removed without any reason or justification. Even when this concern was raised by the lawyer, Judge Charles Smith responded that he had no information and would look into it. This action has caused deep concern and indignation in the public opinion of Kosovo. The action constitutes an unnecessary and unjustifiable interference with Mr. Krasniqi’s personal integrity and dignity. The request to remove the tie is an absurd act as every individual, regardless of their status, has the right to respectful and dignified treatment in court. In this context, I request that you take the necessary steps to address this issue and ensure that such actions are not tolerated in any form in the future,” Minister Haxhiu wrote in her letter to the Chairwoman of the Specialist Chambers.
