On April 29, Montenegro and Albania officially became associated members of the Three Seas Initiative—a regional platform uniting countries between the Baltic, Adriatic, and Black Seas. The milestone was marked during the 10th anniversary summit held in Warsaw, originally launched by Croatia and Poland in 2015.
The presidents of both countries, Bajram Begaj of Albania and Jakov Milatović of Montenegro, participated in the summit at the invitation of Polish President Andrzej Duda.
President Milatović expressed gratitude for Montenegro’s inclusion:
“This gesture is not only recognition of our shared values and aspirations but also proof of the strength of regional unity and cooperation.”
According to a statement from Milatović’s office, Montenegro’s status will transition from associate to full membership once it joins the European Union.
The Three Seas Initiative aims to strengthen infrastructure, energy, and digital connectivity across Central and Eastern Europe. It currently includes 13 EU member states from the region and enjoys strong support from the EU, United States, Germany, and Japan.
“This is a major diplomatic achievement for Montenegro,” said Milatović, adding that the initiative represents a crucial step toward the country’s full integration into the EU.
The Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund is a dedicated commercial fund focusing on critical infrastructure development throughout the region.
