Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović has firmly stated that Montenegro will not change its stance on Kosovo, reaffirming the country’s position of recognition of Kosovo’s independence. In an exclusive interview with Euronews, Milatović emphasized that despite his country’s strong economic ties with Serbia, Montenegro’s diplomatic stance on Kosovo will remain unchanged.
Milatović, an economist and former Minister of Economic Development, explained that while he seeks closer relations with Serbia, the recognition of Kosovo is a fundamental issue where he and Serbia differ. He pointed out that while Serbia still refuses to recognize Kosovo and shows no signs of changing its stance, Montenegro has already recognized Kosovo’s independence and will continue to uphold this position.
The interview is scheduled to air on Thursday, December 12.
In addition to addressing Kosovo, Milatović also spoke about Montenegro’s aspirations for European Union membership, expressing confidence that the country could join the EU by 2028. He acknowledged the challenges along the way, stating, “If there were no challenges, we would already be a part of the EU.” The president remains optimistic about the country’s future in the EU, despite the obstacles it faces in the accession process.
