Russia and Serbia are continuing efforts to find an optimal solution to overcome the challenges posed by U.S. sanctions on the Russian-Serbian company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, calling the task ahead “difficult.”

“Under the current circumstances, we and our Serbian partners must seek an optimal solution to address the artificially created problems by the U.S. administration. We are confident that our Serbian friends, like us, are sincerely interested in protecting our bilateral cooperation from external interference,” Zakharova told RIA Novosti.

Focus on NIS and Bilateral Cooperation

Zakharova emphasized that Moscow remains in close contact with Belgrade to find the best resolution regarding NIS, highlighting that the 2008 intergovernmental agreement will serve as the framework for any solution, respecting both Russian and Serbian interests.

“Moscow has always taken a responsible approach to NIS operations and understands the importance of its successful functioning for Belgrade,” she said.

Energy: A Cornerstone of Russian-Serbian Relations

Zakharova reiterated that energy cooperation remains a key pillar of the Russia-Serbia partnership. Russia has been a reliable supplier of petroleum products to Serbia for decades, ensuring energy stability critical for the country’s economic competitiveness.

“Thanks to Russian investment, NIS transformed from a loss-making company into a modern, efficient leader in the Balkan oil-refining sector. Its privatization was conducted under the 2008 Russia-Serbia intergovernmental agreement, in which Washington had no involvement,” Zakharova added.

The statement underscores the strategic importance of NIS and the commitment of both Moscow and Belgrade to maintain bilateral cooperation despite U.S. sanctions.
