The Albanian Parliament held its plenary session on Thursday, where the Socialist Party (PS) rejected the opposition’s first motion for debate on the government program for the next four years. A total of 73 MPs voted against the motion.

The head of the Socialist parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, argued that the opposition’s request was incomplete and did not comply with parliamentary rules, adding that PS would not accept any proposal that contradicts the assembly’s regulations.

During the heated session, Agron Shehaj, leader of the “Mundësia” Party, called on Speaker Niko Peleshi to resign, claiming that the agenda has not been respected in eight consecutive sessions. “If he cannot enforce his own order, he should step down,” Shehaj said.

Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha also addressed the parliament, focusing part of his speech on Kosovo, where he directed strong accusations toward Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Democratic MP Tomor Alizoti criticized the government’s lack of a resolution on Kosovo, stating that the government program does not even mention Kosovo. He called it a national disgrace that Albania has not yet approved a resolution condemning the genocide in Kosovo.

In response, Balla confirmed that Prime Minister Rama will not attend the protest scheduled for Friday, arguing that his presence would politicize the march.
