The International Documentary and Short Film Festival, DokuFest, has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the decision by the Directorate of Culture, Youth and Sports of the Municipality of Prizren to significantly reduce subsidies for the second consecutive year.

Despite an overall increase in the municipal culture budget, funding for DokuFest has been cut by nearly 30% compared to last year, now representing less than 9% of the festival’s total budget.

Organizers described the move as one that undermines the cultural and economic importance of the festival and deals a blow to what has been built with dedication for nearly a quarter of a century.

“It’s not just a matter of budget. It’s a matter of vision and commitment to culture, citizens, and the image of Prizren,” reads DokuFest’s official statement.

DokuFest urges institutions and citizens to stop viewing culture as a luxury, but rather as a core part of the city’s identity and development.

“DokuFest is not just an event. It is an investment in the future of our city – economically, culturally, and socially,” the statement emphasizes.

The festival’s organizers call on the Municipality of Prizren to urgently reconsider the decision and reaffirm its commitment to culture. At the same time, they invite all partners – artists, citizens, donors, and cultural supporters – to stand with the festival.
