Elon Musk, one of the world’s richest individuals, has announced his departure from his role as a “special government employee” in Donald Trump’s administration.

In a post on X, Musk thanked the President for the opportunity to assist in leading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — an initiative aimed at shrinking the federal government and cutting expenditures.

However, his exit is far from coincidental.

Just one day earlier, Musk expressed being “disappointed” with Trump’s proposed budget, which includes trillions in tax cuts alongside increased defense spending — a central part of Trump’s re-election platform.

According to BBC reports, the White House began official procedures for his removal on Wednesday evening, though Musk’s role was always intended to be temporary.

His departure also comes amid public criticism over DOGE’s impact on massive federal workforce cuts — with thousands of public sector jobs affected so far.

This move signals that relations between Musk and Trump are colder than ever, as the billionaire technologist shifts focus back to his companies — and possibly, to his long-rumored political ambitions.
