The Australian National Imams Council, which represents imams and Muslims across the country, today condemned the attack at Bondi Beach near Sydney, in which a total of 16 people lost their lives.

“Although this attack targeted the Jewish community, in reality it is an attack on all of us, including the Muslim community. This violent act of terrorism is an attack on all Australians,” the council said in a statement, according to the BBC.

The council emphasized that antisemitism—expressed through hatred, harassment, and violence directed at the Jewish community—has no place in Australian society.

“We call on community members and leaders to reach out to their Jewish neighbors, friends, and colleagues to offer them support and comfort during this difficult time,” the statement added.

The Australian Muslim Federation, which brings together Muslim organizations across the country, also stated that those responsible must face the full force of the law.

Sixteen people, including a child and one of the attackers, were killed in the assault at Bondi Beach during the celebration of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah on Sunday afternoon local time. Police said the second attacker remains in critical condition.
