More than 2,000 people have lost their lives in Myanmar after a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which also affected areas in Thailand and China.

As a result of the tragedy, Myanmar’s military government has declared a national week of mourning, and a moment of silence will be observed on Tuesday at 12:51 local time, marking the exact time the earthquake struck on Friday.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Thailand, at least 20 fatalities have been confirmed, and thousands of people have been evacuated from damaged buildings in Bangkok.

Rescue teams are continuing the search for survivors, but hopes are fading as the critical 72-hour window following the earthquake has passed.

According to the UN, the earthquake has further worsened the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, a country already grappling with a four-year civil war.

Despite the devastation, reports suggest that the country’s military forces have continued airstrikes against pro-democracy rebel groups.
