NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that he expects clarity on the security guarantees Europe can offer Ukraine either at Thursday’s summit of Ukraine’s allies or shortly afterward.
“I expect that tomorrow, or immediately after, we will have clarity on what we can jointly offer,” Rutte said during a press conference with Estonian President Alar Karis at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Stronger Transatlantic Coordination
Rutte emphasized that once European commitments are clarified, intensified engagement with the United States will follow, to determine what role Washington will play in providing security guarantees for Ukraine after the war with Russia ends.
Leaders to Co-Host Security Talks
The upcoming virtual summit on Thursday will be co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The meeting will bring together leaders of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing,” composed mainly of European nations working to establish long-term security assurances for Ukraine.
