NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called for an end to inflammatory rhetoric from Serbian officials directed at Kosovo’s institutions, urging Serbia to show leadership in easing tensions in the Western Balkans, reports RKS News.

In his address on May 26 before the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Rutte responded to the Serbian representative by criticizing the use of terms such as “the regime in Pristina,” stating that such language does not help calm the situation. “It doesn’t work. Serbia is the largest country in the region, and we need its leadership. But please, refrain from that kind of rhetoric,” he said.

Rutte emphasized the importance of NATO’s force in Kosovo – KFOR – describing it as a key factor for regional stability. He assured that the alliance will ensure KFOR remains fully prepared and equipped with all necessary capabilities, though he did not confirm any troop increases or reductions.

The NATO chief also recalled his recent meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, stressing the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the terrorist attack in Banjska, Zvečan, and other incidents that occurred during 2023.
