Washington, July 12, 2025 — NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., today for a two-day visit, where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

While NATO’s official statement did not specify the agenda of the meetings, the visit comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and speculation regarding U.S. military support for Ukraine through the NATO alliance.

President Trump recently hinted at a “major announcement” on Monday, stating that the United States would be willing to supply Ukraine with weapons via NATO, raising questions about potential shifts in alliance strategy.

The meetings are expected to focus on:

NATO’s support framework for Ukraine

U.S.-Europe defense burden sharing

The future of transatlantic security cooperation under Trump’s administration

This is Rutte’s first official trip to Washington since taking over as NATO chief in early July.
