Amid renewed nuclear threats from Moscow, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of nuclear deterrence and public awareness in Western countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently reiterated Moscow’s long-standing nuclear rhetoric, suggesting that Russia could conduct its first nuclear test in over 30 years. Lavrov noted that preparations are “underway,” following orders from President Vladimir Putin. Similar statements had also been made earlier by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Responding to these developments, Rutte stated that Western governments must engage openly with their citizens about nuclear prevention:

“When Russia uses dangerous and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric, our citizens should know there is no reason to panic, because NATO has a strong nuclear deterrent,” he said.
“And Putin must understand that a nuclear war can never be won and must never be fought,” Rutte added.

Rutte highlighted that credible nuclear deterrence must remain reliable, secure, guaranteed, and effective — serving as the ultimate safeguard for international security.
