Facing a heightened threat from Russia, NATO is pushing for a significant increase in military readiness, requesting that Germany contribute 40,000 more troops to the alliance’s collective defense.

According to internal sources, NATO is asking Germany to provide seven additional brigades, amounting to around 40,000 soldiers. These requests are part of new force and armament targets expected to be finalized by NATO defense ministers next week.

🔸 A senior military official revealed that the total number of brigades expected from all NATO allies could rise to 120–130, a 50% increase from the current target of about 80 brigades.

🔸 A spokesperson from the German Defense Ministry declined to comment, citing the need to wait until decisions are officially made at next week’s ministerial meeting and the NATO summit at the end of June.

🔸 NATO itself has not yet made any official statement regarding these developments.

🛡️ Russia Seen as Major Threat

Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, NATO has intensified its strategic posture, viewing Moscow as a significantly elevated security risk.

Although exact numbers and commitments remain unconfirmed, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte plans to urge member states at the Hague Summit to double military spending targets — from the current 2% of GDP to 5%.

  • 3.5% would be allocated directly to the military.
  • 1.5% would fund supporting defense sectors.

This bold step signals NATO’s pivot to a more robust and ready force in response to sustained geopolitical tensions and Russian aggression.
