NATO announced on Friday its plans to bolster its presence in the Baltic Sea following suspected sabotage of undersea internet lines and power cables. The incidents are believed to involve Russia’s so-called “dark fleet.”, reports RFE.

Estonia, in coordination with its allies, has launched a maritime operation to protect a key power line in the Baltic Sea.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized the alliance’s commitment to enhancing military presence in the region, stating on social media, “NATO will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea.”

The announcement comes as Finland and Estonia, both with Baltic Sea coastlines, strengthen their cooperation against hybrid threats. Estonian President Alexander Stubb highlighted the urgency of countering risks posed by Russia’s “dark fleet,” referring to older, unregistered ships used to bypass Western sanctions and generate income for Russia.

Although investigations into the sabotage continue, Western governments have accused Russia of escalating hybrid warfare tactics, with suspicions pointing to Moscow’s involvement in damaging communication cables.
