Amidst the unfolding conflict, Ukraine’s military strategy has earned high praise from NATO’s top general. Despite Ukrainian forces making gradual retreats from certain front-line positions, General Christopher Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, commended Ukraine’s overall military approach during his address at the Aspen Security Forum, Politico reports.
“Over the past few months, Ukrainians have focused on safeguarding their eastern territories, effectively denying Russia unfettered access to Crimea and southern Ukraine for launching further attacks on the rest of the country. They have also ensured continued access to the Black Sea and worked diligently to build up their military strength,” Cavoli stated.
“I believe their strategy is excellent. The key component is force generation,” Cavoli emphasized during his speech at the prestigious U.S. security and foreign policy conference.
Victory in modern warfare, according to Cavoli, hinges on a nation’s ability to generate military force. This involves optimizing the use of personnel, training, and weaponry—an area where he believes Ukraine excels.
“You need weapons; you need people; and you need to train them. The equipment largely depends on us, and I think that is progressing well,” he remarked, referring to the $61 billion U.S. military aid package approved in April after months of delays. Ukrainian forces are now experiencing an influx of weapons and ammunition.
Ukraine faces the daunting task of mobilizing as many citizens as possible for the war effort. The situation has seen improvement since the parliament passed a crucial mobilization law in April. This new legislation mandates Ukrainian men aged 25-60 to register at recruitment offices both within Ukraine and abroad.
“Ukraine faces challenges in how it utilizes its people. There’s a balance to be struck between those who must work in factories, fields, and military operations. It’s the Ukrainian government’s responsibility to determine that balance. Recently, they extended the recruitment age, bringing in people who are still at a very capable age,” Cavoli noted.
