Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushila Karki has announced that she will remain in office for no longer than six months, stepping down after the general elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.
Speaking publicly for the first time since taking office, Karki stated that becoming Prime Minister was not her personal choice but rather a response to strong demands from protesters.
She confirmed that her tenure would end immediately after the elections.
Karki assumed the role following an agreement with leaders of the “Generation Z” protests, which erupted after the government banned social media platforms and widespread anger grew over corruption and injustice.
She emphasized the protesters’ demands:
“We must work according to the vision of Generation Z. What this group seeks is the end of corruption, good governance, and economic equality.”
At the same time, she expressed regret over the destruction caused during demonstrations:
“If it was Nepalese who destroyed essential institutions, how can they truly be called Nepalese?”
