U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans for strict economic measures against countries that align with the “anti-American” policies of the BRICS group, threatening to impose new trade tariffs.
10% Tariff and Broad Implications
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump stated that the U.S. will levy an additional 10% tariff on “any country that aligns with BRICS’ anti-American policies,” emphasizing there will be “no exceptions.” Trump, however, did not specify which particular policies he was referring to.
“I am pleased to announce that United States Tariff Letters and/or Agreements with various countries from all over the world will be delivered starting at 12:00 PM (Eastern Time) on Monday, July 7th. If you don’t move things forward, then on August 1st you will boomerang back to your April 2nd tariff level,” Trump said during a special broadcast on Sunday evening.
The announced tariffs could start at 10% and potentially go up to 70%, although Trump’s economic advisors suggest that key trading partners will not be affected by the higher rates.
BRICS Expansion and Resumption of Tariffs
The BRICS member states currently include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This group is steadily gaining influence on the global economic stage and is increasingly seen as a strategic rival to the West.
The 90-day tariff pause, previously announced by the U.S. administration, concludes on Wednesday. Trump confirmed that warning letters would begin to be sent to dozens of countries on Monday.
