The Government of North Macedonia today declared a 30-day state of crisis across the entire country due to numerous ongoing wildfires.

Decision Driven by Complex Situation and High Risks

Government spokesperson Marija Miteva announced that the decision was made following a session of the Steering Committee for Coordination and Management of the Crisis System. This was prompted by “the complexity on the ground, high temperatures, strong winds, and risks to the environment, property, and citizen safety.”

“This on the ground means enabling an integrated approach and coordinated action of all competent institutions – the Army, police, fire departments, Crisis Management Center, Directorate for Protection and Rescue, and local self-governments,” Miteva stated at a press conference after the government session in Skopje. “All resources, including human, technical, and logistical, will be mobilized to tackle the fires and protect the population.”

Government Pledges Aid, Urges Citizen Caution

Miteva emphasized that the government will provide urgent and timely assistance to all affected areas to prevent greater consequences.

“The state will be where it is most needed. We call on citizens to be maximally cautious and respect all recommendations and prohibitions,” the North Macedonian government spokesperson urged.

According to data from the Crisis Management Center, by 12:30 PM today, nine fires were active in North Macedonia, with one already localized.
