Following the recent terrorist attack on the Iber-Lepenc canal in Varage, Zubin Potok, the situation in northern Kosovo remains fragile.
In response, Kosovo Police have increased their presence in the four northern municipalities to ensure security. However, local officials warn that Serbian nationalist groups continue to pose a threat to stability.
Rising Concerns
Nexhat Ugljanin, Chair of the North Mitrovica Municipal Assembly, highlighted the persistent presence of nationalist groups allegedly influenced by Belgrade.
“As you know, North Mitrovica and other municipalities remain on high alert due to the presence of ultranationalist groups operating on the ground. These groups, directed by Belgrade, have the potential to escalate tensions at any moment. Kosovo’s security institutions are actively working to prevent any incidents in the northern region,” Ugljanin stated.
Izmir Zeqiri, the Mayor of Zubin Potok, echoed similar concerns while emphasizing the efforts of Kosovo’s security mechanisms.
“The recent terrorist attack on the Iber-Lepenc canal was a severe threat. However, security forces have everything under control and are actively working to dismantle the network behind such actions,” Zeqiri affirmed.
Security Measures
KFOR, the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, continues its regular patrols and engagement with local communities to prevent further tensions. A KFOR spokesperson reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all residents.
The attack on the Iber-Lepenc canal underscores the ongoing challenges to stability in northern Kosovo. While the situation remains under control, officials caution that the influence of external actors could lead to further unrest.
