Norway has announced it will provide Ukraine with nearly $100 million to purchase natural gas for the upcoming 2025-2026 heating season. The executive director of Ukraine’s state-owned energy company Naftogaz, Sergey Koretsky, confirmed the donation of 1 billion Norwegian kroner ($98.3 million), stating it would help Ukrainians survive the winter and strengthen the country’s energy security.

Ukraine’s Critical Energy Shortage

The Norwegian aid comes as Ukraine faces a significant energy deficit. According to recent reports, the country’s underground gas storage facilities are at a historic 12-year low, currently only 32.3% full. Ukraine needs to secure an additional 1.7 billion cubic meters of gas by November 1 to meet its target and ensure a smooth heating season.

The Norwegian contribution adds to other recent efforts to secure Ukraine’s energy supply. Earlier this month, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced a separate €500 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for gas purchases, guaranteed by the European Union.
