Residents of Novi Sad commemorated the 13th month since the collapse of the railway station canopy, which claimed the lives of 16 people, with candlelight vigils and a silent march.
The event, organized by informal civic groups, began at Trg Slobode, where red lanterns were arranged in the shape of a heart, with the number 16 in its center to honor the victims. Participants then silently walked to the railway station, lighting candles and laying flowers at the site of the tragedy. A 16-minute moment of silence was observed, with each minute dedicated to one of the deceased.
“13 months have passed, 16 lives lost, zero accountability. The fight continues,” read a message at the conclusion of the gathering.
Earlier in the day, students also paid tribute at the same site, calling for justice:
“Corruption kills! Demands have not been met. 13 months, zero accountability. We will stay on the streets until justice is done, until all responsible are held accountable.”
Commemorations were also held on the same day in Subotica, Niš, and Belgrade.
The tragedy sparked nationwide protests in Serbia demanding criminal accountability from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). An investigation is ongoing, and an indictment has been filed. Among those under suspicion are former government ministers Goran Vesić and Tomislav Momirović.
