A potential U.S. agreement regarding Greenland could include Washington taking control of small areas of the island.

This was reported by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.

According to the report, prior to the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 21 that a future agreement had been finalized, NATO military officials discussed the possibility of a compromise under which Denmark would grant the United States sovereignty over a small portion of Greenland.

The compromise, which could involve the construction of U.S. military bases on the island, is being discussed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who has expressed support for such an arrangement, according to three officials.

Sources compared this model to the British military bases in Cyprus, which are considered British overseas territory. However, it remains unclear whether this idea is part of the concept announced by Trump.
