Nine people, including a child, have died in Odesa, southern Ukraine, due to extreme weather and catastrophic flooding, the State Emergency Service reported.

Locals shared videos on social media showing the entire city submerged, as heavy rain flooded streets and cut electricity to surrounding areas.

“Within seven hours, Odesa received almost a two-month rainfall amount. No stormwater drainage system can withstand such a load,” said Odesa Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov on Telegram.

Meteorologists reported rainfall exceeding 80 mm, breaking all previous records. Roads are blocked, vehicles stranded, and residents trapped, while emergency teams are working across the city. Approximately 24,000 people remain without power.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid travel as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
