Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has officially been nominated as the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) candidate for the upcoming German elections, which will take place on February 23.

In fact, as reported by the newspaper mdr.de, the overwhelming majority of 600 delegates – at the SPD conference in Berlin – voted in favor of the 66-year-old, in an open vote. In his speech, Scholz warned about the risks of power falling into the hands of the CDU/CSU.

He also emphasized that the tax cuts promised by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) would benefit “millionaires and billionaires” and that “ordinary people will pay the price with cuts in care, healthcare, and pensions.”

Furthermore, Scholz stated that the “disorderly situation” prevailing in the world requires a government with maturity, clarity, and experience.

Scholz was unanimously appointed as the candidate for Chancellor by the federal executive board of the SPD at the end of November, despite criticism from the party’s youth wing, SPD Jusos.
