Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has stated that only intensified political pressure—both domestic and international—can convince Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pull back from his renewed military offensive in Gaza.
In a recent interview, Olmert emphasized that this pressure must be escalated, noting that even the involvement of former U.S. President Donald Trump could embolden Netanyahu’s stance rather than deter him.
Olmert’s remarks come at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions, particularly between Israel and the United Kingdom. The UK has suspended trade talks with Israel, summoned the Israeli ambassador, and imposed sanctions on settlers in the West Bank. Additionally, London has publicly condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for increased aid to the besieged territory.
While Olmert praised the UK’s firm stance, he warned that economic sanctions should not harm Israeli civilians, many of whom, he said, support ending the war and securing the return of hostages.
The former leader’s comments reflect growing internal dissent in Israel over Netanyahu’s military policies, as well as the increasing international isolation faced by the Israeli government over its handling of the Gaza conflict.
