The historic Operation Shigjeta was a decisive and defining moment for the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) and the outcome of the Kosovo war, celebrated today on its 26th anniversary during a central commemorative event.
Rrahim Bekteshi, the commander of Operation Shigjeta, stated that this military campaign “exposed the Serbian forces from behind their camouflage” and mobilized the entire arsenal of the UÇK to achieve Kosovo’s freedom.
Bekteshi emphasized that the UÇK’s fight was a just cause aimed solely at liberating Kosovo from Serbian occupation. He explained that beyond its national importance, the operation held international military significance by allowing NATO aircraft to identify and target Serbian army and police positions more effectively.
“Thousands of fighters from various countries participated in this operation,” Bekteshi said, highlighting its broad support.
The acting Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, underlined that Operation Shigjeta was aimed at destroying Serbian enemy forces and was crucial for the future of the UÇK.
“Today, Kosovo is building a modern, well-trained army ready for military operations. Operation Shigjeta is one of the most decisive operations, not only for continuing the UÇK’s fight but for its outcome,” said Maqedonci.
Croatian Colonel Ervin Shkaçan, representing the “Tigers” Association from Croatia, praised the significant contribution of Kosovo’s fighters. Reflecting on the operation, he shared, “Looking at the photos from Operation Shigjeta fills me with nostalgia. We have wished that you too could liberate your country just as we did ours.”
Deputy Sala Jashari from the Democratic Party of Kosovo described Operation Shigjeta as the “final blow to the Serbian machinery.” She stressed that the great values of the UÇK form the foundation of Kosovo’s freedom and independence and warned that disrespecting these values undermines the very foundations of the state.
During the commemorative academy, acknowledgments were given to fellow fighters and representatives from the Croatian “Tigers” Association, who also expressed gratitude toward the Operation Shigjeta Association.
Operation Shigjeta was conducted from May 26 to June 10, 1999, with three tactical directions: Kosharja, Pashtriku, and Koritniku, spanning the border area from Kosharja to Korintik.
It is estimated that approximately 8,000 UÇK fighters took part in this crucial military campaign.
