Following the failure to form a new government under Albin Kurti and Vetëvendosje (VV), Kosovo’s opposition parties are signaling their intention to form a government without VV after anticipated early elections later this year.

Representatives from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) stated that they will not propose a prime ministerial candidate to President Vjosa Osmani, as they currently lack the necessary parliamentary votes.

Constitutional Procedure

According to Kosovo’s constitution:

  • If the proposed government fails to secure a parliamentary majority, the president has 10 days to nominate another candidate.
  • If the second attempt also fails, the president must call early elections, which must be held within 40 days of the announcement.

Opposition Reaction

  • PDK Leader Memli Krasniqi described the failure of Albin Kurti to be re-elected as prime minister as the “end of a political deception.” He criticized Kurti for leaving no room for cooperation, dialogue, or compromise, declaring that Kurti’s era of governance is over.
  • LDK Deputy Hykmete Bajrami emphasized that the failure to form a government has returned the responsibility to the citizens. She highlighted that the party which won 42% of votes in the last elections is now returning the mandate to the public due to its inability to form a coalition.
