A special address by Serbian opposition representatives is expected at 11:00, following yesterday’s violent incident on the steps in front of the National Assembly.
Opposition parliamentary group leaders are currently meeting, after Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić pledged to clear access to the parliament building in response to the confrontation with MPs from the SRCE party, MP Đorđe Stanković told Danas.
According to unofficial information, the opposition’s press conference will follow a separate address by representatives of the ruling coalition, indicating continued tensions between the two blocs.
The incident occurred when two opposition MPs attempted to remove a tent placed on the staircase leading to the Assembly, prompting a physical altercation with a group of citizens camped in the so-called “Ćacilend.” Police intervened only moments later.
This confrontation has once again highlighted the increasingly hostile atmosphere around the National Assembly, which critics argue is a direct consequence of the ruling regime’s political manipulation of public spaces and state institutions.
Observers say the incident reflects the broader climate fostered under President Aleksandar Vučić’s rule, where state resources are used to shield loyalist groups while restricting the movement and rights of opposition MPs—a pattern that continues to undermine democratic norms in Serbia.
As a reminder, police forces clashed yesterday with MPs from the Serbia Center (SRCE), led by Zdravko Ponoš, after the group attempted to enter the parliamentary session through the main entrance, which remains obstructed due to the presence of “Ćacilend.”
