Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that European leaders need to accept the need to change their strategy regarding Ukraine.

In comments made to Hungary’s state broadcaster today, Orban argued that the current strategy was not working and that Russia was advancing on the front line. He added that the victory of the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump “has changed the state of the war,” according to The Guardian.

Orban did not specify what actions he believed Europe should take regarding Ukraine, but reiterated his call for a Christmas ceasefire in the war in Ukraine. He suggested exchanging up to 1,000 prisoners of war between Moscow and Kyiv.

The nationalist leader has long been a vocal supporter of Trump and has consistently sought to undermine the EU’s support for Ukraine. He has routinely blocked, delayed, or softened the bloc’s efforts to provide arms and funding and to sanction Moscow for its invasion.
