Budapest, July 28, 2025 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sharply criticized the recently announced trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, calling it less favorable than the deal the United Kingdom has with the US.

In a live broadcast on Facebook, Orban stated:

“This agreement between the US and the EU is less favorable than what Britain has with America.”

Taking aim at both former US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Orban used pointed irony to express his disapproval of Brussels’ handling of the negotiations.

“Donald Trump didn’t make a deal with Ursula von der Leyen. On the contrary — Donald Trump had Ursula von der Leyen for breakfast,” he said mockingly.

According to the newly unveiled terms, most European goods will face a 15% tariff under the deal — a higher rate than the 10% tariff applied to British exports to the United States.

Orban, long considered Trump’s closest ally in Europe, has repeatedly blamed Brussels’ poor negotiating skills for what he views as damaging trade outcomes. He emphasized that these “harsh tariffs” are a direct consequence of the EU’s weakness on the international stage.
