Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has become the first and only European leader to openly support U.S. President Donald Trump following his highly tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Taking to social media platform X, Orban praised Trump’s stance, stating:
“Strong people make peace, weak people make wars. Today, President Donald Trump bravely stood for peace, even if it was hard for many to accept. Thank you, Mr. President!”
Orban’s endorsement contrasts sharply with the overwhelming European support for Zelensky. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor-designate Friedrich Merz, outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron have all reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine.
Von der Leyen commended Zelensky, saying, “Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Stay strong, fearless. You are never alone, Mr. President.”
Merz and Scholz also echoed unwavering support for Kyiv, emphasizing that Germany and Europe stand by Ukraine. Macron, meanwhile, reiterated: “Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine is the victim. We must respect those who have fought since the beginning.”
The White House has denied reports that Zelensky stormed out of the meeting, instead claiming that Trump himself dismissed the Ukrainian president following their heated exchange—though the administration has not clarified why this detail was deemed crucial.
