The conflict in Ukraine will be resolved one way or another next year, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told Magyar Nemzet, outlining two potential scenarios for peace between Moscow and Kyiv.
“The war will end in 2025. Either through successful peace negotiations or with the destruction of one of the warring parties,” Orbán stated.
A long-time critic of Western military aid to Kyiv and sanctions on Russia, Orbán discussed how Hungary has navigated the past three years of the crisis in Ukraine. He highlighted the economic resilience of his country compared to many EU members, which he claims have struggled financially during the same period.
“In 2025, peace politics will replace war politics, and we will see great economic successes again,” Orbán added.
However, the Hungarian leader did not specify which side he believes might face destruction in 2025.
US President-elect Donald Trump has also argued that both Ukraine and Russia should seek to end the bloodshed. Trump, who has pledged to broker a ceasefire upon taking office in January, enjoys Orbán’s endorsement and has been praised by the Hungarian prime minister for his potential to bring about peace.
