President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, was received at the Holy See for an audience with Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.
Through a video message, Osmani described the day as highly significant for Kosovo–Vatican relations. She expressed hope that the long-awaited decision to recognize Kosovo by the Vatican will be made, emphasizing that such recognition would contribute to peace and stability in the region and across Europe. She also invited Pope Leo XIV to visit Kosovo.
“I conveyed the hope and trust of the entire people of Kosovo that the Vatican will finally take the decision to recognize the Republic of Kosovo, acknowledging our long struggle to live free, independent, and in democracy,” Osmani stated.
She stressed that recognition would not only support Kosovo’s prosperity and success but also promote peace and stability in the Balkans and Europe. Osmani highlighted Kosovo’s historical contributions, mentioning figures like Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg and Saint Teresa, as well as the role of Dardania in European Christianity and humanism.
President Osmani also extended the greetings of the people of Kosovo for Christmas and the New Year and reiterated her invitation to Pope Leo XIV to visit Kosovo, hoping the visit will take place soon.
