President Vjosa Osmani stated after meeting with political party representatives that there is a risk of holding two closely timed elections if the parliament fails to elect a president following parliamentary elections.
She explained that some participants raised concerns that if elections are held in December and the government is formed only after several months, a failed presidential election could immediately trigger new elections, creating political instability.
“Suppose elections are held in December and the government forms months later. If the presidential election fails, we could immediately face the need for new elections. This scenario was raised as a warning about potentially having two elections in close succession,” Osmani said.
Osmani fully supports the idea of directly electing the president by the people, viewing it as the best way to avoid political crises and reflect the citizens’ will.
“Direct presidential elections would eliminate the need for new parliamentary elections. I saw a willingness from the parties to seriously consider this. It requires a constitutional amendment, but it is not impossible,” she added.
She emphasized that direct elections would strengthen democracy and ensure greater institutional stability in Kosovo.
