President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani responded to questions from journalists regarding what would happen if the winning party fails to secure enough votes to form the government. She stated that she would not rush to make assumptions about such a failure.
Osmani emphasized that if neither the first nor the second party manages to form a government, constitutional deadlines would apply.
“If such a situation arises — where neither the first party nor the one with the second opportunity succeeds — then there are deadlines set by the Constitution, as well as several Constitutional Court rulings on this matter. The timeframe is between 30 to 45 days, and I would set the date in accordance with Kosovo’s interests and after consulting with political parties. I will not speculate about failure; there is still some time, and I hope there will be full commitment to forming the Government of Kosovo, as citizens voted on February 9 for the creation of institutions,” she stated.
Regarding the Serb List’s appeal to the Constitutional Court to suspend the work of the Assembly, President Osmani said such a move was completely unnecessary.
She stressed that the delays caused by the Serb List harm not only Kosovo’s interests as a state but also those of all its citizens, including Serbs.
“It is totally unnecessary because we’ve already had extraordinary delays in forming institutions. I believe this is yet another attempt to create more delays, which, as you know, have already harmed Kosovo’s interests. We’ve gone months without a fully mandated government. It’s in Kosovo’s best interest that now, after the Assembly has been constituted in line with the Constitutional Court’s ruling, we form a government with a full mandate. The formation of the government depends entirely on political coalitions — as president, I cannot interfere. The delay that the Serb List is trying to create harms not only the state of Kosovo but all of its citizens, including Serbs,” Osmani concluded.
