Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to extend the deadline regarding the Strait of Hormuz by two weeks to allow diplomacy to take its course.

Sharif also urged Iran to reopen the Strait.

He said:

“Diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East are progressing steadily and strongly, with potential to deliver concrete results soon. To allow diplomacy to follow its course, I sincerely urge President Trump to extend the deadline by two weeks. Pakistan, in all sincerity, asks our Iranian brothers to open the Strait of Hormuz for a corresponding two-week period as a gesture of goodwill. We also call on all parties to respect a ceasefire during this time so that diplomacy can achieve a final resolution, in the interest of peace and long-term stability in the region.”

Sharif’s appeal comes amid heightened tensions over navigation and security in the strategically critical waterway.
