The sovereignty of the Panama Canal is non-negotiable, stated President José Raul Mulino in response to threats of annexation made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
“I want to be clear, Mr. Trump’s statements today, suggesting he would discuss a financial offer, are false and no such offer has been received by this government. Let’s be clear: the Canal belongs to the Panamanians, and it will remain that way,” the president said in a statement to the Panamanian media, according to ANSA.
“The sovereignty of our Canal is non-negotiable. Until January 20, the U.S. government will be led by Joe Biden. After that, we will have relations with Mr. Trump and his government, but we will not negotiate over the Canal,” he added.
