Following the swearing-in of Kosovo’s new parliament and the failure to elect Albulena Haxhiu as Speaker, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) reaffirmed its willingness to take responsibility for forming a new government, despite finishing second in the February 9 elections.

PDK Claims Institutional Leadership Role

“PDK demonstrated once again its state-building role and commitment to democratic institutional functioning,” the party said in an official statement.

By voting in favor of the Verification Commission’s report on quorum and mandates, the PDK says it helped overcome an unnecessary parliamentary deadlock, following the commission’s decision to officially acknowledge the resignations of the Prime Minister and ministers—an approach aligned with a Constitutional Court ruling from the case of former Rahovec Mayor Qazim Çeska.

This allowed the new legislature to be formally constituted, restoring a degree of institutional normalcy.

Calls for Responsibility, Urges Action from Leading Coalition

“The clock for establishing new institutions has started,” said the party, pointing responsibility toward the VV-Guxo-Alternativa coalition.

While PDK recognizes the constitutional right of the leading coalition to propose a candidate for Speaker of the Assembly, it emphasized that this does not imply automatic support for that nominee.

Prepared to Lead if Mandate Fails

The PDK reaffirmed its readiness to lead a new professional government under the leadership of Bedri Hamza if the VV-led coalition fails to secure a governing majority.

“PDK remains committed to democracy, state-building, and development,” the statement said, adding that it stands ready to guide Kosovo back to a path of stability, development, and integration.
