Two high-ranking police officials in Peja – a lieutenant colonel and a captain – have been arrested on suspicion of “misuse of official duty.” Both suspects have been detained for 48 hours, as announced in a joint press release from the Police Inspectorate of Kosovo (PIK) and the Basic Prosecution in Peja.

Investigation Details Emerge

“PIK investigators, in coordination and with the authorization of the Basic Prosecution in Peja, have continued to undertake investigative actions against individuals suspected of criminal offenses. The investigative actions have included, among other things, interviewing persons involved in this case, as well as the suspects,” the statement read. “Following intensive work by the State Prosecutor and PIK, two police officials were arrested as suspects for the criminal offense of ‘misuse of official position or authority’ and, by decision of the prosecutor, they have been ordered into 48-hour detention.”

PIK investigators, authorized by the Basic Prosecution in Peja, will continue further investigative actions to fully clarify all circumstances related to this case.

Initial Incident and Alleged Interference

Details regarding the case, involving the two police officials, were previously released by PIK yesterday. The initial incident reportedly occurred on May 28, 2025. On that date, police officials in Peja were notified of a traffic accident on “Shpëtim Bojku” street. During the scene inspection, they escorted a suspect to the police station. This individual was reportedly not involved in the accident but was obstructing police officers in performing their duties.

The arrested police lieutenant colonel and captain are suspected of interfering in this case (the escorting of the suspect to the station) by not forwarding the case for investigation and failing to notify the Prosecution, contrary to standard police operating procedures for such incidents. Instead, they allegedly issued the suspect a misdemeanor ticket for disturbing public order and peace.
