Former Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, previously rumored as a potential replacement for Slovak envoy Miroslav Lajčák in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, is reportedly in the running for a prominent United Nations role related to the Middle East.
According to Finland’s “Ilta Sanomat” newspaper, Haavisto is being considered for the position of UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. However, the appointment has encountered resistance from Israel, which is critical of his candidacy.
“On Tuesday, it became clear that MP Haavisto’s nomination as the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process is at risk in its final stages due to opposition from Israel,” reports Ilta Sanomat.
A source familiar with UN affairs told the Finnish newspaper that Haavisto’s chances of being selected are diminishing, especially given Israel’s explicit opposition. While the UN Secretary-General has the authority to make an independent decision, input from key stakeholders often influences such appointments.
Meanwhile, Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to Gazeta Express that Finland has not submitted any candidates, including Haavisto, for the EU Special Envoy role in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
The evolving situation underscores the complexities of diplomatic appointments and the balancing act between regional support and international consensus.
