The Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Niko Peleshi, participated in the solemn reception marking the 18th anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Kosovo, conveying the warmest congratulations on behalf of the Parliament and the Albanian people. He described this date as a historic moment of freedom, dignity, and justice for the Albanian nation.
In his speech, Peleshi regarded Kosovo’s independence as one of the brightest acts in modern national history, emphasizing that it represents the triumph of a people’s right to live free, sovereign, and independent after decades of oppression, discrimination, and systematic violence. He praised the sacrifice and resilience of the people of Kosovo, as well as the decisive role of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in achieving this historic goal.
The Speaker highlighted that, despite being a young state, the Republic of Kosovo has become a democratic country and a factor of stability in the region, taking its rightful place among the community of democratic nations. He also underlined the crucial support of the United States, NATO, and the European Union, which stood on the side of justice and freedom.
In this context, Peleshi expressed concern over the ongoing judicial proceedings against former leaders of the liberation war, emphasizing that justice for them is directly tied to the justice of Kosovo’s cause itself. He also recalled the February 13 Declaration of the Albanian Parliament in support of Kosovo and its liberation struggle, describing this stance as a moral, historical, and national obligation.
Speaking about relations between Albania and Kosovo, the Albanian Parliament Speaker emphasized that they are fraternal relations and a strategic partnership, grounded in shared history, sacrifices, and aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration. He stressed the commitment to deepen inter-parliamentary cooperation and Albania’s continued support for Kosovo’s membership in the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe.
Peleshi also highlighted the strong and unwavering support of the United States for Kosovo, considering it an important guarantee for the country’s future and for the entire region.
In conclusion, he stated that Kosovo’s independence is a victory of freedom over oppression and a source of pride for the entire Albanian nation. He wished Kosovo’s institutions success in fulfilling their responsibilities and reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to support Kosovo on its path toward Euro-Atlantic integration.
