The event comes at a time when many progressive voters are feeling exhausted, disappointed, and despairing after the electoral defeat of former Vice President Kamala Harris. Rebranded as the “People’s March,” the demonstration aims to garner broader support from this demographic, according to AP.

The Women’s March will take place today in Washington, rebranded as the People’s March, just two days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

In 2017, women dissatisfied with Trump’s presidential victory in 2016 flocked to Washington and organized large-scale rallies in cities nationwide, laying the foundation for what became known as the Women’s March.

The initial march in Washington drew over 500,000 demonstrators, with millions more participating in marches across the country. These rallies were among the largest single-day demonstrations in U.S. history.

This year, the Washington march is expected to attract only a fraction of the original crowd.

Broader Focus for the 2025 March

The event takes place at a moment when many progressive voters feel disheartened following Kamala Harris’s electoral defeat. Rebranding the event as the People’s March is an effort to draw wider support, reports AP.

Tamika Middleton, Executive Director of the Women’s March, stated that the goal of today’s event is not to replicate the massive demonstrations of 2017.

Instead, the march aims to spotlight a range of issues—women’s and reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration, climate change, and democracy—rather than focusing solely on Trump.

A Platform for Social Justice

The demonstration will highlight themes such as feminism, racial justice, and antimilitarization, concluding with discussions led by social justice organizations.

The shift in focus reflects a broader strategy to unite progressive causes and address systemic issues beyond immediate political frustrations.
